These Terms of Use (“Terms”) are an agreement between you and I Know History (“IKH,” “we,” “us”). They cover your use of www.iknowhistory.org and its related services, including essay publishing, essay competitions and the questions and mastery features (together, the “Service”). By using the Service, you accept these Terms, our Privacy Policy and our Editorial Policy.
You must be at least 13 to create an account. If the law where you live sets a higher age for consenting to online services, you must meet that age or have a parent or guardian accept these Terms for you. People under 13 may take part in competitions only through a participating school or partner institution. You may browse public content without an account.
Give accurate information and keep it up to date. Keep your login details secure; you’re responsible for activity on your account. Each person may have only one account. Tell us at admin@iknowhistory.org if you suspect unauthorized use.
By submitting an essay or other content (“Submission”), you confirm that:
You keep copyright in your Submissions. You grant IKH a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, transferable and sublicensable license to host, reproduce, edit (for format, length, clarity and style), publish, display, distribute, translate, archive and promote your Submission, in any medium. You also grant IKH the right to use your name as you’ve chosen to display it, plus a short excerpt, to credit and promote your work. We may sublicense these rights only to our service providers and to the partner institutions of the competition you entered, for the purposes in these Terms. Because the license is non-exclusive, you’re free to publish your essay elsewhere. Please credit IKH as the place of first publication where you can.
You can ask us to unpublish a Submission at any time. We’ll remove it from public view within a reasonable time, usually within 30 days. However, essays that placed in a competition may stay in the competition’s official archive and results, and copies already printed or distributed can’t be recalled. Unpublishing ends our license for new uses, except for that archive.
5A. Competitions:
Each competition is governed by its Official Rules, which set out eligibility, deadlines, topics, judging criteria, prizes and partner details. If the Official Rules and these Terms conflict on a competition matter, the Official Rules apply. Judges’ decisions are final. Prizes can’t be transferred. Winners are responsible for any taxes, and prizes may be withheld from anyone who breaks these Terms or the rules. Competitions are void where prohibited. Entering never requires a purchase.
Quiz questions, levels, scores and streaks are provided for learning and fun. They have no monetary value and may be reset or changed. Don’t use bots, scripts or shared answers to manipulate scores or leaderboards.
You agree not to:
The site’s design, logos, question banks, rubrics and other materials we create belong to IKH or our licensors. You may use them for personal, non-commercial learning. You may not copy them in bulk, resell them or use them to train commercial AI models without written permission.
We may review, edit, refuse or remove any content, and we may suspend or close accounts that break these Terms, with or without notice. We aren’t obliged to monitor content, but we act on reports. You can report content or appeal a decision at admin@iknowhistory.org.
If you believe content on IKH infringes your copyright, send a notice to our designated agent: Legal Advisor, I Know History, 502 W 7th St, Ste 100, Erie, PA 16502, USA, admin@iknowhistory.org. Include the information required by 17 U.S.C. § 512(c)(3): identification of the work, the location of the infringing material, your contact details, a good-faith statement, a statement under penalty of perjury that your notice is accurate, and your signature. We terminate repeat infringers’ accounts.
The Service may link to other sites and mention partner institutions. We aren’t responsible for their content or practices.
The Service is provided “as is” and “as available.” Essays reflect their authors’ views, not IKH’s. We review submissions but don’t guarantee that every published essay is accurate or complete. To the fullest extent the law allows, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement.
To the fullest extent the law allows, IKH and its volunteers, judges and partners aren’t liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost data or profits. Our total liability for any claim relating to the Service is limited to the greater of US$100 or the amount you paid us in the past 12 months. Some jurisdictions don’t allow these limits, so they may not apply to you.
If you break these Terms or infringe someone’s rights, you agree to cover IKH’s resulting costs and claims, including reasonable legal fees, as far as local law allows.
These Terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, USA, excluding its conflict-of-law rules. Disputes will be resolved in the state or federal courts located in Pennsylvania, unless the law where you live gives you the right to bring claims in your local courts. Before filing any claim, please contact us so we can try to resolve it informally.
We may update these Terms. We’ll post changes here with a new effective date and notify you of material changes at least 14 days before they take effect. If you keep using the Service after that, you accept the updated Terms.
These Terms, the Privacy Policy, the Editorial Policy and any competition’s Official Rules make up the whole agreement between you and IKH. If any part of these Terms is unenforceable, the rest still applies. If we don’t enforce a provision, we haven’t waived it. You may not transfer your rights under these Terms. We may transfer ours to a successor organization.
